When making lotions or shower gels and bubble bath it is particularly important that you maintain a clean sanitized area. I suggest that you double check that you have all your ingredients handy so you do not have to leave in the middle of making your lotions.
It is suggested that you sanitized any equipment you use by washing your utensils in a diluted bleach solution (eg 1 tsp bleach to a bucket of water) or by wiping your utensil with rubbing alcohol.
The method I am showing here avoids human contact with the lotion and keeps it covered most of the time thus avoiding any airborne particles (dust) getting into the lotion.
Using a large plastic zip lock bag, fill it with the lotion direct from the jug. Make sure you weigh your lotion so you know how much fragrance to add.
Colour: To ad your colour and fragrance, add a drop of the dye (specially formulated for lotions - FD&C or D&C colour is recommended). Seal the bag leaving as little air as possible. Now massage the bag with your hands to mix in the dye. Add more if needed.
Fragrance: Make sure your Fragrance is considered "Body" safe for Lotions/Bubble Bath and at least "Soap" safe for Shower Gels
For LOTIONS you can use up to 1% by weight. (eg. if you have 500 gm of lotion you can use up to 5gm of fragrance - if you are weighing in ounces then 16oz of lotions - use 0.16 of an ounce of fragrance.)
For GELS you can use up to 0.5% by weight. (eg. if you have 500gm of gel you can use up to 2.5gm of fragrance - if you are weighing in ounces then 16oz of lotions - use 0.16 of an ounce of fragrance.) - much more than this can cause the gel to become watery - this can be resolved by adding a small amount of salt to the gel. NOTE: When adding fragrance to gels - it can make your gel go cloudy - it is recommended that you use 2 parts of Polysorbate 20 (Solubizer) to 1 part of fragrance. This should allow your fragrance to mix with the gel without clouding (but it cannot be guaranteed).
Again, seal the bag and massage well to mix in the fragrance. About .25 of an ounce is equivalent to 1 tsp of fragrance.
When you are sure all the ingredients are mixed together, and you have your bottles lined up, snip a small hole in the corner of the bag.
Squeeze the lotion into the bottle. Tap the bottle periodically to disperse any air bubbles.
When finished, put lids on and label your product. Shown here are 4oz bottles.
